Ally or Accomplice? The Human Cost of Dismantling Racism in Psychology
The COVID/Racial pandemic global social unrest has catapulted long-standing conversations pertaining to structural racism to the forefront. The murder of George Floyd shined light on the persistent complexities of racism in America. The American Psychological Association (APA) advocates that the science of psychology can contribute to addressing societal inequities and achieving genuine systemic change during (Abrams, 2020).APA's Commitment to Addressing Systemic Racism requires professional exploration at all levels. What does it mean to be an ally or accomplice within this context? This interactive talk will interrogate the human cost of racism as it relates to the actualization of becoming an ally or accomplice and implications for the practice of psychology. We will consider what paradigm shifts are warranted to actualize the promise of psychology when acknowledging its role in the complex pain that the field is poised to heal. “You can choose to look the other way, but you can never again say you did not know.” ~William Wilberforce
Learning Objectives:
- Critically consider the impact of the APA apology, resolution, and efforts for dismantling racism.
- Discuss the difference between being an ally or accomplice and the implications for practice.
- Describe and critique the human cost associated with becoming an ally or accomplice.
- Articulate at least three (3) suggested paradigm shifts for the field of psychology.
