Assessing and Treating Adolescent Substance Use Disorders: An Overview for Clinicians Helping Youth

About this event

Marin County Psychological Association Presents:

Emily Tejani M.D.

Assessing and Treating Adolescent Substance Use Disorders: An Overview for Clinicians Helping Youth and/or Parents Navigate the Process

This talk will cover national and local trends in adolescent and young adult substance use, with a focus on the trends and risks specific to adolescent cannabis and alcohol use. In addition, Dr. Tejani will provide an overview of effective treatment approaches that clinicians can use when working with youth who are experiencing drug or alcohol related issues, as well clinical strategies that can help support the parents of those youth (and which in turn may indirectly improve the outcomes of youth experiencing a substance use disorder). The discussion will therefore be relevant to both clinicians who treat adolescents, as well as clinicians who work with parents of adolescents. Dr. Tejani will discuss evidence-based substance use disorder treatment strategies that can be used in outpatient and/or private practice settings, as well as an overview of how and when to consider referring youth to more specialized or higher (residential) levels of care, as well as how to support families toward finding high quality treatment programs. Participants will be able to more effectively engage youth with substance use disorders in treatment, will enhance their substance use disorder treatment skillset, and will improve their competency with regard to addressing the concerns that parents of youth with substance use disorders tend to present to treatment with.

Dr. Emily Tejani is a physician board-certified in 3 medical specialties: Adult psychiatry, child & adolescent psychiatry, and addiction medicine. She has a long-standing private practice in Marin County where she specializes in providing family-based consultation and treatment for youth and adults experiencing psychiatric and substance use disorders. She previously worked at the University of California at San Francisco, where she helped to develop a Youth and Young Adult Outpatient Substance Use Program, as part of the California Youth Opioid Response.  In addition to her clinical work, she has worked as an expert witness on federal opioid litigation, and she regularly provides mentorship, training, and consultation to other physicians and therapists through organizations such as SAMHSA’s Opioid Response Network, the University of California at San Francisco, and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.
